Sodium alginate, a natural polysaccharide, has the stability, solubility, viscosity and safety required for pharmaceutical excipients. The first scientific study of alginate extracts from brown seaweed was carried out in 1881 by the British chemist E.C.Stanford. He found that the alginate extract had several interesting properties, including the ability to concentrate solutions, form gels and form films. Based on this, he made several applications for industrial production. However, alginate was not produced on a large scale until 50 years later. Commercial production began in 1927 and now around 30,000 tons are produced worldwide each year, of which 30% is used in the food industry and the rest in other industries, pharmaceuticals and dentistry.
Uses:
